Space Traveler Shares Depression Following Wave of Backlash Following Journey
A pioneering space traveler has publicly detailed her emotional downturn after enduring a relentless barrage of criticism in the wake of a historic all-female space mission.
Amanda Nguyen – known as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the brief journey to space in the spring, which also featured well-known figures.
The mission was heavily criticized by some, who cited its expense and ecological impact.
Reflecting on the ordeal, Ms. Nguyen, who made history as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the vicious response eclipsed her moment under an landslide of gendered hatred.
“I told her my depression might last for years,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a online statement, referring to a supportive conversation from a mission companion in the days following the landing.
She characterized the news reports and online discourse as an barrage beyond typical human coping.
“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she wrote. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”
Overshadowed by Sexism
The researcher, who has dedicated her work to female health science and operated research during the flight, said all her lifelong efforts – including her scientific research and extensive preparation to the symbolic importance of her roots – was drowned out under the tide of misogyny.
She is widely recognized for her groundbreaking advocacy fighting for justice for survivors of assault.
Her own aspiration for spaceflight was paused after being assaulted during her time as a student, leading to a long campaign for accountability.
A Path to Recovery
Months following fulfilling her dream, she noted the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she acknowledged the followers whose support helped save her. “You all saved me,” she affirmed.
She added that amid the criticism, considerable good had emerged from the mission, such as increased focus on her women's health research and new advocacy opportunities.

The computer-piloted New Shepard rocket departed its launch site in the spring, carrying the all-female team on a short trip that crossed the edge of space.
