This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Relationship.
Consider this a test for partners in committed relationships who appreciate horror films: Sit down with your significant other and view Together. This 2025 indie hit recently had its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. At first glance, it could look like typical physical horror, but beneath Together resides a intense contemplation about how we choose to love our partners.
A Directorial Debut Exploring The Nuances of Love
Together marks the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, partners that have remained a couple for a decade. United in marriage in real life in 2017, Franco and Brie infuse a unique chemistry to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.
The narrative begins when Millie and Tim relocate from the metropolis to the rural area for Millie’s job. A commonly used story element, sure, but that’s primarily where the conventions end. Together becomes as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.
An Otherworldly Trigger
While trekking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim discover an hole in the earth. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a strange force starts to affect the pair. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past typical partnership.
The whole movie is a slow burn horror experience, interspersing elements of dreamlike terrors, unsettling (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny interactions (sometimes amidst something disturbing). Shanks orchestrates these parts expertly and delivers them in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.
Layered Performances
A great deal of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is suffering due to a emotional and physical gap. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.
Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve left the city and removed from his social circle. He fears the concept of totally forfeiting his sense of self in Millie. This fear is amplified by the fact he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for getting around.
The film's most intelligent aspect in Together avoids making Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.
Tim and Millie face the type of challenges that are inherent in any relationship a decade in. Deep down, they continue to care for one another. They find humor with each other, offer support, and share intimately at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their future together.
Thematic Depth
While the paranormal elements in Together represent these fears of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to another person, the symbolism never feels overly obvious or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the supernatural and the personal work together symbiotically.
A Divisive Ending
Together’s conclusion, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about unhealthy partnerships. It has been said that unattached audience members have seen the movie as a strong argument for staying single. Meanwhile, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.
Regardless of your relationship status, your own response could act as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the finale plant anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in either protagonist and yell at the screen, or simply look at your significant other and utter, “I’d do that for you”?
Whatever the case may be, Together is an test you can experience today.
Together is streaming on Hulu now.
