An underground economy for unlicensed slimming drugs is being driven by TikTok fitness influencers and vendors on messaging platforms, according to recent findings.

The experimental drug, which remains in clinical trials, is being promoted by social media influencers for its supposed fat-burning effects. Viewers are encouraged to contact these profiles directly for source information, while also receiving discount codes.

Thriving Trade on Messaging Platforms

Separately, a robust market exists on messaging services, where communities with thousands of members share comparison photos, injection guides and claims of next-day British shipping. Sellers market the drug there before directing customers to other platforms for transactions.

Learning About The Experimental Drug

Retatrutide is an investigational injection developed by American pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly. The treatment affects three intestinal hormones – glucagon-like peptide-1, GIP and pancreatic hormone. Early trials indicate it could assist individuals lose up to a quarter of their body weight. Referred to as the “triple G”, the substance is being hailed digitally as the successor to Ozempic.

Healthcare Experts Express Concerns

However, physicians and chemists have cautions that the distribution of what remains an unapproved drug in the United Kingdom is a cause for concern and could result in users administering substances of unknown origin.

Several professionals stated the popularity for retatrutide could be linked to the increasing price of approved weight loss products such as Mounjaro.

Selling the unapproved drug on social media or Telegram is prohibited in the UK, as it is an unapproved medication that must not be promoted or distributed for personal consumption under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.

Several influencers attempt to circumvent the rules by calling to the drug as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a restricted substance, but promotion and distribution can still breach medicines, marketing, and customer regulations, potentially leading to penalties, prosecution or prison.

Platform Reaction and Content Removal

According to TikTok, the platform has removed violative material and banned associated keywords and query recommendations. The organization said it was dedicated to maintaining the platform safe and allocating resources in enhancing enforcement strategies.

Research also found groups with up to nine thousand participants marketing the experimental drug using Telegram's built-in discovery tool, which operates like a public directory. Entering “retatrutide” instantly brings up channels with numerous of members, populated with images of slimming results, glowing testimonials and step-by-step guides for mixing or injecting at residence.

After moments of joining one group, a vendor shared contact information, where most purchases take place. The vendor provided an guidebook and promised shipping within 48 hours. When questioned whether the substance was authentic, one seller responded: “You can’t be sure.” Another shared a image of a supposed testing documentation. None inquired about body mass, health issues or past usage.

Product Details and Pricing

Inside these communities, posts display dark colored parcels with postal service stickers, stating to contain new batches. One communication read: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Customers can choose between powder vials, prepared at home with purified liquid, or ready-to-use injectors usually priced at £160 for 20 milligrams. When questioned how long a pen should last, vendors give conflicting responses varying between a few weeks to “depends on your body”.

Platform Moderation and Safety Measures

A representative for Telegram stated it regularly moderated harmful content on its service including content that encouraged the “misuse of controlled medications”. The organization added that it eliminated “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Healthcare Professional Warnings

“People are injecting materials they cannot confirm. Although the science behind retatrutide is valid, these online products may not include what they claim,” stated a pharmacy expert, the head of pharmacy at Chemist4U.

Dr Crystal Wyllie of Asda Online Doctor linked the increase in interest to current cost increases for authorized weight-loss drugs such as Mounjaro. “With costs increasing, individuals are using online platforms. But counterfeit treatments are highly dangerous. You can’t be certain what’s contained or whether the environment they were made in was sterile,” she explained.

Her staff has already encountered individuals harmed by self-injection from unconfirmed sources. “We understand the frustration, but purchasing from Telegram or WhatsApp is taking chances with your well-being,” said Wyllie. “These materials could be impure or improperly measured.”
